When the sun comes out in Vancouver, there are few things better than heading to the beach — especially if your dog loves to splash, swim, dig, and roll in the sand.
But before you pack the towel and tennis ball, it is important to know that dogs are not allowed on every Vancouver beach. In the City of Vancouver, dogs are only allowed at beaches in designated off-leash areas, including Hadden Park, John Hendry Park, New Brighton Park, Spanish Banks Beach Park, and Sunset Beach Park. Some locations also have seasonal or time-based restrictions, so always check the posted signs before letting your dog off leash.
Below are some of the best dog-friendly beach spots in Vancouver for swimming, sunny walks, off-leash play, and cooling off on warm days.

This is a great choice if you and your dog love a more natural beach experience. The shoreline can be rocky in places, and the tide can change the feel of the beach quite a bit, but it is still one of the most beautiful places in the city to spend a sunny afternoon with your pup.
Spanish Banks is especially nice for dogs who enjoy sniffing, splashing, and exploring rather than just racing around in a fenced field. It is also a strong choice for sunset walks.

2. Hadden Park Off-Leash Dog Beach
Best for: Kitsilano-area dogs, city beach vibes, quick ocean dips
Good for swimming? Yes, in the designated dog area
Vibe: Busy, central, scenic, social
Hadden Park is one of the most popular dog beach spots near Kitsilano. Located close to Vanier Park and the Vancouver Maritime Museum, it gives dogs waterfront access in a very central part of the city.
This is a great option if you want a dog beach that feels urban but still gives your pup a chance to enjoy the ocean. It is also a convenient choice if you live near Kitsilano, Fairview, Granville Island, or downtown.
The park includes a dog off-leash area with waterfront access, making it a popular stop for dogs who love a quick swim or a sandy play session.
Hadden was a favourite for us with Avy. She loved to swim and play and always did lots of both at this beach. It’s easy to park near the beach (note: it is pay parking) and walk over. The vibe at the beach is more social than at Spanish Banks, where people tend to keep to themselves a little more.

Sunset Beach is a convenient beach option for people living downtown, in the West End, Yaletown, or near False Creek. It is not the biggest or wildest beach experience, but it is one of the easiest places to fit in a dog-friendly waterfront outing without leaving the city centre.
We have been to Sunset Beach several times over the years and have enjoyed it, but a word of warning – a friend who lived in the area and visited often did find needles on the beach on more than one occasion so do use caution.
This spot is especially good for an evening walk when the weather is warm and your dog needs a change of scenery. The surrounding seawall area makes it easy to add extra steps before or after your beach stop.

Spanish Banks is hard to beat if you want classic Vancouver scenery. It has mountain views, ocean air, and a more spacious feel than some of the central dog beach areas.
Best for downtown dog owners: Sunset Beach
If you live downtown or in the West End, Sunset Beach is one of the easiest dog beach options to fit into your day.
Best for Kitsilano-area dogs: Hadden Park
Hadden Park is ideal if you want a central dog beach close to Kits, Vanier Park, and the seawall.
Best for East Vancouver dogs:
New Brighton Park or Trout Lake

Best for nervous dogs: Go early or choose quieter times
For nervous, reactive, or easily overwhelmed dogs, the “best” beach is often less about location and more about timing. Try early mornings, weekdays, or cooler evenings when crowds are thinner.
What to Bring to a Vancouver Dog Beach
A little preparation can make your beach visit much easier, especially on hot days.
Consider packing:
- Fresh drinking water
- Collapsible dog bowl
- Dog towel
- Poop bags (a must everywhere you go!)
- Long line, if your dog needs extra backup
- Floating dog toy
- Waterproof leash and collar

Beach Day Dog Gear We Actually Use
These are a few of our “must bring” items that go in our bag when we visit the beach:
Quick Dry Towel (goes a long way to keeping your car clean – or cleaner!)
Collapsible Dog Dish (small and easy to pack along – don’t forget to bring a bottle of water too!)
Chuck-it Floatable Frisbee (seriously Avy’s FAVOURITE toy – lasted 10 years and still going strong. we got the orange so it is easy to spot in the water).
Dog Beach Safety Tips
Dog beaches are fun, but they can also be overstimulating. Before you let your dog run free, take a minute to scan the area.
Watch for:
- Broken glass
- Sharp shells or rocks
- Strong waves or currents
- Algae or poor water conditions
- Unfriendly or overwhelmed dogs
- Wildlife
- Food scraps or garbage
- Fishing hooks or lines
Also, try not to let your dog drink ocean water. Saltwater can upset their stomach and may make them vomit or have diarrhea. Bring fresh water and offer it often.
After your visit, it is a good idea to rinse sand and saltwater from your dog’s paws and coat, especially if they have sensitive skin.
We make a point of picking up beach glass when we see it at dog beaches and it is SHOCKING how much we find. After one season we had a large bag full.
Also be wary of people having a picnic or BBQ at the beach – it is very tempting for a dog to steal a taste of food that is at nose level!
Are Dogs Allowed on All Vancouver Beaches?
No. Dogs are not allowed on all Vancouver beaches.
According to the City of Vancouver, dogs are only allowed at beaches with designated off-leash areas. The listed dog beach locations are Hadden Park, John Hendry Park, New Brighton Park, Spanish Banks Beach Park, and Sunset Beach Park.
That means you should not assume your dog can go onto the sand or into the water at every beach, even if they are on leash. Always check the official rules and posted signs.
