Best Indestructible Dog Toys for Aggressive Chewers (Tested & Ranked)

A German Shepherd with a KONG indestructible Dog Toy

If your dog destroys ‘indestructible’ toys in minutes, you’re not the problem—the toys are.

Some dogs don’t just play with toys—they obliterate them.

My dog Ember is one of those dogs. She is a power chewer who has turned “tough” toys into shredded rubber, loose threads, and questionable safety hazards faster than I’d like to admit.

So instead of wasting more money, I went on a quest to find the best indestructible toys that could hold up against even Ember’s strong jaw!

Our Recommended Options (but keep reading for more details):

If you just want the quick answer (or the TLDR):

How We Tested These Dog Toys

The top 3 things I look at when I try a new toy:

  • How long does it actually last?
  • Is it safe when it starts breaking down?
  • Is it worth the money?

These recommendations aren’t just pulled from Amazon reviews—we’ve either tested them ourselves or evaluated them based on consistent real-user feedback.

Best Indestructible Dog Toys for Aggressive Chewers

Goughnuts MAXX Ring – Best Overall

If you want a toy that’s as close to indestructible as it gets—this is it.

The Goughnuts MAXX ring is specifically designed for extreme chewers, and it has a built-in safety indicator layer. If your dog chews through to the red core, you replace it.

Why it stands out:

  • Extremely durable rubber
  • Safety-first design
  • Trusted by power chewer owners

Best for: Dogs who destroy everything like Ember
Downside: Not the cheapest option

West Paw Toys – Best for Daily Use

This is a great balance between durability and playability.

It’s tough—but not rock-hard—so dogs actually enjoy chewing it regularly.

Best Features:

  • Safe, slightly flexible material
  • It’s dishwasher safe
  • It floats (great for beach days in BC!)

Overall Impression:

Best for: Moderate to strong chewers
Downside: Extreme chewers can eventually damage it

KONG Extreme – Best Budget Tough Toy

the KONG – A classic for a reason.

The KONG Extreme is one of the few widely available toys that can actually hold up to strong chewers—especially when used as a stuffable enrichment toy.

You’ll notice that KONG comes in a variety of colours – the colours indicate the strength of the toy.

Puppy (Pink or Light Blue): Made with soft, pliable, and gentle rubber designed for teething puppies (usually 9 months and younger).

Classic (Red): The standard red rubber formula, durable enough for most adult chewers.

Extreme (Black): Made with the strongest, most durable rubber for powerful, intense chewers.

Senior (Purple): Specially formulated for older dogs with aging teeth, this rubber is softer than the red, similar to the puppy formula but often tailored for comfort.

The classic toy is the rubber cone shape that you can stuff with soft food, peanut butter, yogurt, etc. as an enhancement toy. But KONG does offer a variety of other toys as well. Regardless of the type of KONG toy you purchase the colour codes are the same.

Ember’s Experience: While Ember is the most destructive chewer I have ever met in a dog, I do find that she does just fine with the classic red KONG. We have several varieties (they are a favourite in this house) including one that is purple and she has not managed to destroy any of them.

Why the KONG stands out:

  • Durable rubber formula
Doubles as a mental stimulation toy
Widely available and more affordable than many other durable dog toys

KONG Extreme Tires – Best Interactive Tough Toy

If you want an interactive toy that goes beyond the classic KONG shape, we recommend KONG Extreme Tires.

Unlike the Mammoth Tire that we tried, the KONG actually stands up to the strong chewer in your life.

We like it because you can use it in multiple ways. Want to play outside with your dog? Throw or roll it for your dog to chase. Need an interactive game to keep your dog busy? Stuff the inner ring with wet dog food, peanut butter, kibble or yogurt. Perfect for keeping your dog busy. And if your dog likes to lie down and have a chew after a game of fetch, it can work for that too.

What Makes it Awesome

  • Made from KONG’s extreme rubber for strong chewers
  • Unique tire shape adds bounce and movement
  • Can be stuffed to extend playtime
  • Works for both chewing and light fetch

Benebone Wishbone – Best Nylon Chew

The Benebone Wishbone is an Ember FAVOURITE. We bought the 4 pack of benebones for large dogs on Amazon because it is much cheaper than buying them individually in the store.

While Ember does like to chew on all 4 of her Benebones, the Wishbone is by far her favourite.

If your dog loves to gnaw for hours, this is a great option. Especially on rainy days or times when  you don’t have time for a long walk. (For more ideas on how to keep your dog entertained in the house check out our post on keeping your dog entertained indoors.)

It is made from durable nylon and infused with real flavors, and keeps dogs engaged much longer than rubber toys.

  • Long-lasting for heavy chewers
  • Flavored for extra interest
  • Great for solo chewing time

👉 Pro Tip: The edges of the Benebone can get rough over time. If you start to notice this you can try to file them down (we have done this successfully). If they get too rough or your dog is able to chew off pieces of the toy then it is time to replace it.

What Didn’t Hold Up (Real Talk)

The Mammoth Tire Biter

This one looks (and claims to be) tough—but didn’t last for us.

Within 5 minutes of giving it to Ember she had already chewed off several large pieces – leading to safety risks.

If your dog is a light chewer, it might work—but for aggressive chewers, there are much better options.

What to Look for in an Indestructible Dog Toy

Not all “tough” toys are created equal.

Look for:

  • Rubber (best overall) → durable + safer when it starts to wear down
  • Nylon (long-lasting) → great for gnawing, but monitor the edges as they start to get rough
  • Rope/fabric →  not for aggressive chewers

Safety First:

  • Avoid toys that shred into pieces
  • Replace toys when chunks start coming off
  • Look for brands with safety guarantees

Final Thoughts

If your dog is an aggressive chewer, the goal isn’t finding a toy that lasts forever (that doesn’t exist).

Instead look for:

  • Safe
  • Long-lasting
  • Worth the money
