Capilano Off-Leash Dog Park is a large trail system on the hills just south of the South Thompson River. The trailhead is difficult to find because it appears to be on private property but the old concrete and gravel road in from the street is an old City access road to some old infrastructure.
Walk to the end of the road and you’ll find the trailhead to the left of the big log and pile of gravel. The trail heads downhill immediately and comes to a fork. Turn right and you’ll come across a bench with spectacular views of the valley and river.
We spoke with a couple people while we were there, they told us that the trail network is vast and can take you many kilometers east and west. Apparently some of the trails cross leased land or private property. In most cases the owners have no issue with people hiking the trails, in other cases there have been issues with people being disrespectful with garbage and noise – apparently some people were riding dirt bikes. So beware that you may run into new fencing or no trespassing signs and may be forced to turn back and find another route. Having said that, there are so many trails and turns that you’re sure to have a good hike and a great workout on this trail system.
