A seaside escape that feels like a mini vacation

Dog-friendly Crescent Beach is one of my favourite places in the world. It is one of those places that makes you slow down the moment you arrive. As soon as I step out of the car and take a deep breath the smells instantly take me to a happy place in my mind. Tucked into South Surrey near White Rock, this charming beach community has that classic West Coast feeling: salty air, quiet streets, beach houses, mountain views, and a long shoreline that feels made for long walks and daydreaming.

It is also one of the prettiest places in Surrey to catch a sunset. According to Discover Surrey’s Crescent Beach guide, Sullivan Point Park is a popular sunset-watching spot, while the walk north toward Blackie Spit and Wickson Pier offers quieter views. If you are planning a dog-friendly beach day, it is well worth timing your visit so you can stay for golden hour.

For dog owners, Crescent Beach is a wonderful place to visit as long as you know where dogs are allowed, where they need to stay leashed, and where they should not go at all. Nearby Blackie Spit Park is the real highlight for dogs, with designated off-leash areas and Surrey’s only designated off-leash dog swim area. Avy LOVED visiting the Blackie Spit dog-park – both the fenced inland area and the off-leash beach for a run and a swim.

Is Crescent Beach dog-friendly?

Yes, Crescent Beach is dog-friendly, but there are important rules to know before you go.

The biggest update is that leashed dogs are now allowed year-round on Crescent Beach’s main walking path. In a November 2025 City of Surrey media release, Surrey announced that City Council voted to allow leashed dogs along the main Crescent Beach walking path year-round after a successful pilot project. During the summer access period from May 15 to September 15, leashed dogs are allowed on the path on weekdays only, excluding statutory holidays.

That means Crescent Beach itself is best treated as a leashed walk and scenic outing, not an off-leash beach day. If your dog needs space to run, sniff, play, or swim, start next door at Blackie Spit Park.

The City of Surrey’s Crescent Beach park page also notes that Blackie Spit Park, located just north of Crescent Beach, has two dog off-leash areas, including the only dog off-leash swim area in Surrey.

Start your visit at Blackie Spit Park

If you are visiting Crescent Beach with your dog, Blackie Spit Park is the best place to begin.

Located at 3136 McBride Avenue, Blackie Spit Park sits at the edge of Mud Bay and the Nicomekl River in Crescent Beach. The City of Surrey’s Blackie Spit Park page describes the park as having picnic areas, nature trails, and two fully fenced dog off-leash spaces. Whether you are looking for a swim or a place for your dog to run around safely in a leashed enclosure, they’ve got you covered.

There are two main dog areas to know about. The first is the inland off-leash area near the tennis courts. This area gives dogs a place to run and play away from the sensitive shoreline. The second is the fenced dog swim area near the north end of the parking lot. This is especially exciting because it is Surrey’s only designated off-leash dog swim area.

One important tip: the dog swim area is best when the tide is in. At low tide, the water can be far out and the beach becomes more mudflat than swim spot. The City of Surrey specifically recommends checking the tide before you go, and you can use the official Crescent Beach tide station for current tide predictions.

Respect the environmentally sensitive area

Blackie Spit is not just a pretty place to walk. It is also an important wildlife area.

The City of Surrey notes that Blackie Spit is part of Boundary Bay, one of Canada’s top birdwatching areas, and is part of the Pacific Flyway. Migrating and wintering waterfowl use the sandy spit, tidal marsh, and eelgrass beds for feeding and resting, and visitors may also spot harbour seals resting on the sandbars.

Because of this, dogs are not allowed in the Blackie Spit Environmentally Sensitive Area. The City’s updated dog access announcement also states that off-leash dogs are only permitted in the designated off-leash beach and inland areas at Blackie Spit.

This is one of those places where responsible dog ownership really matters. Even a friendly dog can disturb shorebirds, seals, or sensitive habitat. Keep your dog leashed outside the designated off-leash areas, follow posted signage, and avoid letting your dog wander into protected sections of the beach or marsh.

Walk the Crescent Beach waterfront path

Once your dog has had a good run or swim at Blackie Spit, leash up and head toward Crescent Beach for a slower seaside walk.

Crescent Beach is located at 12160 Beecher Street and is open from dawn until dusk. The City of Surrey’s Crescent Beach page lists the beach as a place to swim, play beach volleyball, build sandcastles, and walk the beachfront pathway. The best beach access points are Beecher Street, Sullivan Street, and Target Street.

For dog owners, the main draw is the waterfront walking path. It is flat, scenic, and easy to enjoy at a relaxed pace, with beach homes on one side and wide coastal views on the other.

Just remember that dogs must stay leashed on the Crescent Beach path, and summer access from May 15 to September 15 is limited to weekdays, excluding statutory holidays, according to the City of Surrey’s updated dog access announcement.

Stay for one of the best sunsets in Surrey

Crescent Beach is lovely at any time of day, but it becomes something special in the evening.

The shoreline opens toward Boundary Bay, which means the sky can turn soft pink, orange, and gold as the sun drops. Discover Surrey recommends Sullivan Point Park as a favourite sunset spot, with logs and boulders where people often sit to watch the show. For a quieter view, they suggest walking north toward Blackie Spit and Wickson Pier.

This is the part of the day where Crescent Beach really feels like a mini vacation. Bring a blanket, a warm layer, fresh water for your dog, and a towel if your pup has been swimming. If you take photos for your blog, Pinterest, or social media, sunset at Crescent Beach is a perfect time to capture that dreamy West Coast feeling.

Dog-friendly food and coffee near Crescent Beach

Crescent Beach has a small, relaxed food scene, especially around Beecher Street. Patio policies can change by season, staffing, and layout, so it is always smart to call ahead before arriving with your dog.

The clearest dog-friendly café option is The Sunflower Café at 12310 Beecher Street. On The Sunflower Café’s website, the café mentions that sunny days bring guests and their pets to the garden patio for a drink or treat. It is a great stop for coffee, breakfast, lunch, baked goods, or a slower mid-morning break after your dog has had a walk at Blackie Spit. We had a tradition of visiting the Sunflower Cafe for breakfast every summer and their “hidden garden” fenced garden patio is definitely something special.

You will also find other restaurants and casual food stops in the Crescent Beach area. Because dog policies can change, avoid assuming every patio is dog-friendly unless you have confirmed directly with the business.

Add a quiet forest walk at Crescent Park

If your dog needs a break from sand, saltwater, and beach crowds, nearby Crescent Park is a lovely add-on.

Located at 2585 132 Street, Crescent Park is a large 52-hectare destination park in South Surrey. The City of Surrey’s Crescent Park page describes it as a park with walking trails through mature second-growth forest, ponds, streams, and meadows. The nature trail around the park is about 3.8 km and takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours.

This is not an off-leash area unless otherwise posted. Surrey’s dog off-leash area page states that dogs must be kept on leash in Surrey parks except in designated off-leash areas. But if you want a shady walk before or after your beach visit, Crescent Park is a peaceful option.

What to bring for a dog-friendly Crescent Beach day

Crescent Beach and Blackie Spit are easy places to enjoy, but a little planning makes the day much better.

Bring fresh water, a collapsible bowl, poop bags, a leash, a towel for sandy paws, and a blanket or mat if you plan to sit for sunset. If your dog is swimming, bring a towel for the car and rinse off saltwater when you get home. On warm days, watch for hot pavement and limited shade, especially around parking areas and pathways.

It is also worth checking the tide before you go, especially if your dog loves to swim. The dog swim area at Blackie Spit is much better when the tide is in, and the City of Surrey specifically notes that visitors should check the tide before using the fenced dog swim area.

A simple dog-friendly Crescent Beach itinerary

Start your visit at Blackie Spit Park so your dog can enjoy the designated off-leash area. If the tide is in, head to the fenced dog swim area for a splash. After that, leash up and enjoy a walk through the park, being careful to avoid the Environmentally Sensitive Area.

From there, walk toward Crescent Beach and Beecher Street. Stop for coffee, breakfast, or lunch at The Sunflower Café’s garden patio, then enjoy a leashed walk along the Crescent Beach path if the seasonal rules allow it.

If you can, stay for sunset. Find a spot near Sullivan Point or wander back toward Blackie Spit for quieter views. Crescent Beach is not a place to rush. Let your dog sniff, watch the tide roll in or out, take a few photos, and enjoy one of the prettiest seaside corners in Surrey.

Parking, washrooms, and practical tips

Crescent Beach can get busy, especially on sunny weekends and summer evenings. If your main goal is dog exercise, start at Blackie Spit Park rather than trying to park in the busiest part of Crescent Beach.

The City of Surrey’s Crescent Beach page lists beach access at Beecher Street, Sullivan Street, and Target Street, while Blackie Spit Park has parking at 3136 McBride Avenue. Blackie Spit Park is open dawn until dusk, and the City notes that the washrooms and parking lot gate close at 10 p.m.

Before you go, check three things: the tide, the current City of Surrey dog rules, and the patio policy of any restaurant you plan to visit. That small bit of planning will make your Crescent Beach trip much smoother.

Final thoughts: Is Crescent Beach worth visiting with your dog?

Yes. Crescent Beach is absolutely worth visiting with your dog, especially if you plan around the rules.

It is not a wide-open, dogs-everywhere kind of beach. It is a sensitive coastal area with wildlife habitat, seasonal leash restrictions, and designated dog zones. But that is also part of what makes it special.

You get a beautiful seaside village, mountain and water views, a dog-friendly café, scenic leashed walks, one of Surrey’s best off-leash dog swim areas next door, and some of the best sunsets in the city.

For a relaxed South Surrey day trip, Crescent Beach and Blackie Spit are a wonderful combination: a little beach walk, a little off-leash fun, a little coffee, and a sunset that makes you want to stay just a few minutes longer.
