Mammoth Tire Biter Dog Toy Review: Not So Tough After All?

A German Shepherd sitting behind a tire toy that is on a coffee table.

Our Honest Experience: What Happened After 5 Minutes

If you have a strong chewer, you’ve probably wasted money on toys that claim to be “indestructible”… only to watch them fall apart in minutes.

That’s exactly what happened when we tested the Mammoth Tire Biter with our German Shepherd, Ember.

After speaking with other German Shepherd owners, and getting a strong recommendation from the clerk in the store (who had a German Shepherd herself), we decided to give the Mammoth Tire Biter a try.

It seemed like a good idea. The rubber was thick, construction was solid. It was what you would expect from a “tough” dog toy.

Ember loved it immediately. She knew it was for her and couldn’t wait to start playing with it.

But within five minutes, she had already chewed a hole through the thickest part of the tire.

And that…was the end of that.

What We Expected vs What Happened

Expected:

  • Durable, long-lasting chew toy
  • Designed for strong jaws
  • Safe for extended play

Reality:

  • Damaged within minutes
  • Failed under normal chewing (not extreme destruction mode)
  • Became unsafe quickly

Why This Matters for Strong Chewers

Once a rubber toy is compromised, it becomes a serious safety risk:

  • Pieces can break off and be swallowed
  • Sharp edges can form
  • Internal materials may be exposed

For powerful breeds like German Shepherds, durability isn’t optional—it’s essential.

What We Did Like:

  • Dogs love the shape and texture
  • Easy to grip and carry
  • Looks durable at first glance

Why We Wouldn't Recommend It

  • Not suitable for power chewers
  • Broke almost immediately
  • Poor value for the price

The Bottom Line

⭐ Rating: 2/5

A fun toy—but not built for strong chewers.

Better Alternatives for Strong Chewers

If your dog destroys toys like Ember does, you’ll want something specifically built for extreme chewers.

Here are a few options that consistently perform better

Kong Extreme Rubber Dog Toy (Best Overall)

Why it works:

The Kong Extreme line (any Kong toy that is black in colour) is made from ultra-durable rubber designed specifically for aggressive chewers.

Best for:

  • Heavy chewers
  • Mental stimulation (stuff the Kong with food)
  • Long-lasting play

Why we recommend it

This is one of the few toys that Ember has NOT managed to destroy.

You can find Kong Extreme products on Amazon (click to check it out) or at your local pet supply.

Benebone Wishbone (Best for Flavor & Engagement)

Why it Works

It is infused with real flavor to keep dogs engaged longer.

Best For:

  • Dogs who lose interest in plain toys
  • Supervised chewing sessions

We bought the Benebone  variety pack on amazon (which was great value and much cheaper than buying each of the items in the pack individually). Ember absolutely LOVES the wishbone. It is by far her favourite Benebone shape. She does chew and play with the other shapes, but the wishbone is the clear favourite.

Goughnuts MAXX Ring (Most Durable)

Why it works:

Engineered specifically for extreme chewers, with a lifetime guarantee!

Best for:

  • Dogs who destroy everything
  • Long-term durability
  • Safety-conscious owners

Standout feature:

Goughnuts stands by their products. If your dog manages to chew through it – they will replace it for free!

The Goughnuts MAXX Ring is a bit more expensive than many other dog toys, but worth it as it really lasts. And if Ember DOES manage to destroy it, they have the lifetime guarantee.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve ever bought a toy that lasted less than 10 minutes—you’re not alone. We are right there with you!

The key is choosing toys that are designed specifically for power chewers, not just marketed as “tough.”

Start with one of the options above and you’ll save money (and frustration) in the long run.
