Nanaimo River Regional Park dog park is a beautiful dog-friendly river trail and swimming area in Nanaimo, BC. This natural regional park gives dogs and their people a chance to enjoy forested trails, river views, and access to the Nanaimo River in one peaceful outing.
The park protects one of the few remaining natural forest areas along the lower reaches of the Nanaimo River, including a mature Coastal Douglas-fir ecosystem. For dog owners, it is a lovely place for a walk through the trees, a relaxed trail adventure, and, when conditions are safe, a refreshing splash in the river.
This is not a fenced dog park. It is a natural, multi-use regional park with trails, river access, wildlife habitat, and conservation areas. Dogs should be kept under control at all times, and owners should watch for posted signs in case leashing is required in specific areas. Because the park includes sensitive habitat and conservation zones, it is important to stay on designated trails, respect fencing and signage, and keep dogs away from areas that are not intended for public use.
The trail network leads visitors through the forest and toward the riverbank, where there are swimming areas and scenic places to pause. The river can be a great place for water-loving dogs to cool off, especially in warmer weather, but conditions can change depending on the season, rainfall, and river flow. Always use caution around moving water, keep your dog close near the river, and avoid letting dogs swim when the current is strong.
Amenities at Nanaimo River Regional Park include parking, a toilet, garbage cans, trail access, picnic opportunities, swimming areas, and salmon-viewing opportunities. The park can be accessed from both the Fry Road and Frey Road sides, with the Frey Road access commonly listed as 1955 Frey Road.
Nanaimo River Regional Park is a great choice for dog owners looking for a more natural off-leash-style trail experience near Nanaimo rather than a traditional fenced dog run. It is best suited for dogs with reliable recall, good trail manners, and comfort around other park users, cyclists, wildlife, and water.
Parking at Nanaimo River Regional Park Dog Park:
