Product Review: Cool Pet Pad

Earlier in the summer, as the weather started to heat up, I placed an order for an extra-large Cool Pet Pad from Amazon. It’s a “self-cooling” pet mat that activates and stays cool as soon as your pet lies down on it. It’s pressure activated so you don’t have to put it in the refrigerator or freezer, add cold water or plug it in. The cooling last for about 3 hours at a time and when the pet gets up the pad recharges itself in about 20 minutes.

Unfortunately when I placed my order for the pet pad so did everyone else! It took about 7 weeks for it to finally come in to the store and by the time it did the weather had already started to cool. Still, I persisted in buying it because I’d rather have it now, ready for winter, then have to go through this process again next year. And we’re still having enough sunny days now that Avy is getting some use out of it.

The pro’s:   (so far, we’ve only had it a few days): It’s comfortable and Avy likes it (in fact she’s sleeping on it right now after an enthusiastic game of fetch). It’s big enough that a dog of Avy’s size (78 pounds) can stretch out on it, and it folds up nicely so it doesn’t take up much room when I put it away (this is a bonus in a 500 square foot condo!)

The con’s:   If you are going to put it out on hardwood floors be sure to put a towel or something else under it because it will sweat and leave a damp mark on your floor (something that is not mentioned on the packaging).

It will be interesting to see how the bed fares over the winter and if Avy continues to enjoy it. Hopefully it will work just as effectively next summer as it does now. I will be sure to add some more feedback on this product as we go.
