Gifts With a Purpose for Dog Lovers

The BC SPCA holds a special place in our hearts so this year Avy and I will be purchasing a gift benefiting the BC SPCA.  Their store has a variety of gift items, or if you prefer to give directly to the animals you can choose to gift a day of shelter care for just $17, toys for the animals for $20 or senior care for $27.  Find these packages and more at the SPCA website.

Interactive and Stimulating Dog Toys When Stuck Indoors

As we’re about to enter winter, the days are getting dark, cold and wet.  As the weather starts to turn it’s more important to find ways to keep our dogs busy indoors where it is warm and dry.

Kong Wobbler

One of my dog Avy’s favourite toys is the Kong Wobbler.  I fill it with treats or kibble and they slowly fall out of the hole on the side as she pushes and rolls it around the floor.  It will help keep your dog entertained and is a must have in our house!  It also works great as a food dispenser to slow down dogs who tend to eat too quickly.  The Kong Wobbler can be found on Amazon in three sizes ranging from $17 to $34.

What We Loved:
  • It’s durable for even the strongest chewers
  • It dispenses treats slowly, keeping your dog entertained for a significant period of time

If your dog loves to find hidden items and is a fan of stuffed toys the  Hide-a-Squirrel toy is the perfect gift!  Avy’s best friend Alice LOVES this toy and highly recommends it.  It keeps her busy finding all of the hidden squirrels and then playing with them once she has them out.  It keeps her entertained when long walks aren’t an option and will even tire her right out.  You can find the Hide-a-Squirrel toy on Amazon starting at around $30.00.

Snuffle Mat

Avy loves nosework and one of her favourite games is to play “hide and seek” with her treats.  I hide them around the living room and she has to sniff them all out.  This year I have ordered a Snuffle Mat for her to play with.  The mat is a hand woven shag type mat that you can hide kibble or treats in.  Your dog will then be entertained as they sniff out each and every bite.  Perfect for keeping your dog busy or encouraging a fast eater to slow don and enjoy their food.  Starting at under $35 at Amazon they are a great, affordable gift option for your dog.

What We Loved:
  • It’s machine washable
  • It rolls up for easy storage
  • It exercises your dogs brain which is as important as physical exercise
